古くからまちの人の憩いの場となっていた天祖神社の隣の敷地であり、 施主である神社より商店街で集うことができるコミュニティー施設として計画された。 また災害時には帰宅難民となった駅利用者が宿泊できるように、非常食や毛布を備蓄した地下倉庫も備わっている。 商店街沿いであるため敷地は間口が狭く奥行きのある形状となっており、建物も間口をいかに確保するかが構造的な課題であった。 構造は木造であり、間口方向に壁倍率15倍相当の集成材ブレースを配置し、 入り口の幅が確保できるように配慮している。奥行き方向と建物背面側は構造用合板の耐力壁を用い、 建築計画に合わせた合理的な耐震要素を選択している。 木造集成材ブレースは下階で120ｘ180、上階で120ｘ150の異等級集成材E95-F270を用いており、 柱梁との接合部はガセットプレートとドリフトピンで留め、接合部耐力を十分に確保している。 ブレース構造では柱軸力が大きくなるためなるべく柱継手を減らす設計を行っており、施工者とは事前に綿密な建方計画を行った。

The Machiya is located in close proximity to Tenso Shrine which has a long history as a place providing relief to the inhabitants of Tokiwadai. The Machiya was conceptualized as a community facility that blends in with the shopping avenue instead of Tenso Shrine. In addition it has a basement storage which stocks emergency food and blankets for commuters using Tokiwadai station in case a disaster occurs.As the Machiya is located in a shopping avenue the front is rather narrow while the building has depth so how to secure the frontage of the building was a structural issue.The structure is wooden with laminated wooden brace corresponding to the back wall’s magnification of 15 times compared to the walls in the direction of the entrance so as to ensure the width of the entrance.In accordance with the construction plan the wooden back wall of the building was selected for the seismic resistance element making use of the yield point of the wood planks. The wooden laminated braces measure 120 × 180 cm on the lower floor and 120 × 150 cm on the upper floor come in different levels of thickness and flexibility E95 - F270. The joining parts with the column are attached with gusset plates and drift pins. The expansion gaps are thus hidden to the greatest extent. In order to increase the pillars’ axial force the have devised a plan to decrease connection points to a minimum and discussed the construction plan with the construction company in all detail beforehand.
